Rod Copes has a degree in engineering yet has spent his life finding new ways to sell motorcycles globally. That was not his plan when he graduated college but things have a way of working out. He spent 20 years with Harley-Davidson Motor Company. His last role there was Director of Global Sales and Customer Service. Today he is heading up Royal Enfield’s efforts in America. They are the fastest growing motorcycle company in the world and the US market is their target now.
At the heart of every motorcycle is the engine. Royal Enfield has long relied on their 500cc long stroke single cylinder powerplant. While it is manufactured in India, it has a serious connection to the UK. The vintage motorcycle scene is alive and well in America and around the world. Rod spent a good bit of our conversation discussing the UK connection, their simple single cylinder engine and affordable price. He also disclosed a few pieces of their customer outreach and marketing strategy.
We recorded this show on Sept 11, 2015 because Colette and I were scheduled to depart for the Ramspur Winery Calistoga Half Mile National presented by Triumph Motorcycles Grand National flat track race. We picked up the new Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Ultra on Tuesday with departure on Thursday for the coast to coast ride. Mother nature had other plans. The Napa Valley fire in Northern California postponed the Grand National so we did the only logical thing. We left for Kentucky. The first 100 miles were in a steady to hard rain. We fell in love with the motorcycle.
Upon arrival in Kentucky it was time for a nice cleanup for the Road Glide. The rain in Florida/Georgia and Alabama had certainly took the edge off of its pristine condition. This trip has been a whirlwind from last Thursday until this morning and it has included many cool elements with more to come before we arrive home in Daytona Beach perhaps Sunday night. I’m excited to write a full ride report on the CVO and share some photos and memories from what has been a very memorable tour.
This past week we announced that The Harley-Davidson Motor Company had decided to come on board Talking Motorcycles as a premier level sponsor of the show! There are other great announcements to be revealed in the coming weeks. The only reason we are growing is because of the support we enjoy from those of you who listen to our weekly show. If you have not heard the show we invite you to give our show with Rod Copes/Royal Enfield North America a listen. Here is a link to last nights show:
Many thanks to Sozo, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Crosley Radio/Crosley Brands, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires and Next Moto Champion.
